Zagoria Villages & Vikos Gorge
|
|

|
|
The Greeks have more reason than most to be proud of their architectural heritage. However, far less known than the great works of the classical age are the stone-built villages of Zagoria, an unspoiled region of the Pindos Mountains. If you like challenging wilderness of dramatic peaks and extensive natural forests, then you’re in for a treat!
The brown bear and the lynx, two of the most endangered species, are found here. The Gorge of Vikos impresses us with its slopes and rugged riverbed, a real wilderness challenge as being the deepest canyon in the world.
It sounds too good to be true, really. But it’s out there: stone-built houses, dozens of cobbled mule paths, arched bridges built in the 18th and 19th centuries, and breathtaking gorges…..it’s a perfect escape!
Setting off into the Pindos Mountains on our trekking holiday, you will discover a unique world that most travelers will never see. Our village-to-village hikes follow sun-warmed trails through forests and cross rushing rivers.

After a light lunch in the local taverna we continue on cobbled paths to the tranquil village of Koukouli. Leaving the village we will already see Vitsa on the other side of the Vikos Gorge.

Today starts with a hike down on the 17th century steps of Vitsa into the Vikos Gorge, one of the natural wonders of Greece. This gorge is the deepest gorge in the world after the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Its walls, more than 1.000 meters (3.350 feet) high at places, are actually the highest of any gorge anywhere in the world.
We follow the river to its natural spring called Voïdomatis, where the brave ones get a chance to swim. Its water is so clear that it is safe to drink from it as well. Reportedly it has the cleanest water in Europe, and is also known for its delicious trout.

Today we make a shorter hike in order to relax and swim in Ovires. The inhabitants of Papigo call it like this, because the river that runs down from the mountain, has created deep holes in the rocks here. This unique village is located at the foot of the majestic "Five towers of Papigo", part of Mount Timfi. The stone houses, the allies paved with cobblestones and the church, which is almost a thousand years old, with the hospitality of the inhabitants, make our stay here unforgettable.

After a dive into the water you will feel the tingling effect for hours.

Today we will climb more than thousand meters (3280ft). The beauty of the impressing landscape is an ample compensation for the effort of climbing up. The steep rock high above will give us a feeling of insignificance. We will take a light lunch in the mountain hut and then we continue our hike up to the Dragon Lake. From there our eyes won't get enough of the breathtaking view that developed over the course of millions of years by the unfailing creativity of nature. After this you can't resist swimming in the lake (agreeable temperature).

Some Hints
Please remember that any kind of walking makes some physical demands, so you cannot expect that because a trek is graded "moderate" you will never feel tired.
However, the scenery and the cultural experience are so rewarding that they will offset any lack of "extending" yourself physically.
Please also note that the given duration of each walking tour is calculated without stops, unless otherwise mentioned.
