APOLLO
Delphi & Meteora
Delphi is the place that has everything: a long and glorious history, spectacular ancient remains, a superb museum, and a heartbreakingly beautiful location on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. Look up and you see the cliffs and crags of Parnassus; look down, and Greece's most beautiful plain of olive trees stretches as far as your eyes can see, toward the town of Itea on the Gulf of Corinth.
Meteora: if you have seen pictures, then you have certainly been impressed by the monasteries perched on top of enormous rocks. But as amazing a marvel of nature as these giant rocks are, the buildings on the top of these are a marvel of man and seem just as miraculous and make Meteora one of the most spectacular places to visit in Greece.

Description of every day

Delphi
|

|
Your car will be delivered to your hotel.
Start your journey to Delphi.
(187 km/116 miles NW of Athens)
Delphi is especially magical in the spring, when there's both snow and wildflowers on Mt. Parnassus, but whenever you visit the site, you'll understand why the ancient Greeks believed that Delphi was “the navel of the world”, the spot Apollo chose as the home of his most famous oracle.
Time permitting, it is worthwhile to pay a visit to Ossios Loucas, a Byzantine monastery built in the 11th century, with exquisite frescoes and mosaics.
Overnight in Delphi or Arachova.
|
Delphi - Meteora
|

|
Start today with visiting one of the most important ancient relics of Greece, the archaeological site of Delphi, home of the sanctuary and oracle of the god of light Apollo. Many political decisions were taken after consultation of the Oracle, and no colony was founded around the Mediterranean without the consent of the sanctuary at
Delphi .
The archaeological museum on the site contains many important ancient Greek artefacts from the excavations at
Delphi , such as the famous statue of the Charioteer (Iniohos).
After having visited Delphi depart for Kalambaka.
(approx. 225 km/140 miles)

Meteora
|

|
As we find that you should have ample time to visit Meteora, we are not in favour of having you return to Athens on the same day, unlike in other programs!
After all, this is a once-in-a lifetime-experience you should be able to enjoy without having in the back of your mind the 5-6 hours drive back!
These impressive rocks, created by a rare geological phenomenon, are known as Meteora because they do indeed seem to hang or hover (meteoro in Greek) above the plain. Their summits, totally isolated from the rest of the world, were a refuge for many hermits from as early as the 11th century. Three hundred years later the first monasteries were founded. Most of the monasteries were built or renovated in the 16th century.
Nowadays six are in use.
Overnight in Kalambaka.

Athens
|
Return to Athens passing through Trikala, Lamia and Thermopylae (Leonidas’ statue).
As this is the end of your program, you can choose to drive either straight to the airport or into Athens.
The rental company will collect your car accordingly.
End of the tour.
Upon request, with pleasure our agency can take care of any further arrangements, such as accommodation in Athens, ferry tickets, island hopping packages etc.

General Info
|
|
Fly & Drive
Please note that we have chosen to name our programs ‘Fly & Drive”, as such programs are best known under this name.
However, flights are not included!
Our apologies; a better title would be: “Self Drive Programs”, but probably none of you has ever used such a title to find this product!!
Further, we also would like to point out that flights can be arranged through our agency; so if you haven’t managed to find a good offer yourself, please check with us!
Weekends
We would like to point out that on Friday afternoons and all day Saturday traffic is usually heavier on the national roads as many Athenians will take the opportunity to leave the city for the weekend.
Please check our list of National and/or Religious Holidays under the More Info section, on which dates most sites and museums might be closed or opening hours might be different.
You can check opening days and hours for different sites and museums on the following website: www.culture.gr
